Made In L.A. 2: My First Gallery Exhibition Experience
MILA 2
I recently had the incredible opportunity to showcase my work at the group photo gallery exhibition, "Made In L.A. Pt 2," hosted at Coyote Studios in Los Angeles. This event was a dream come true, and I can't express enough gratitude to Snoopz Visualz for making it happen. Being part of such a talented lineup was a true blessing, and I am humbled by it all.
The Significance of Being Included
As a photographer, videographer, and brand strategist focusing on micro-narrative documentaries, my style is deeply documentarian with a strong sense of intentionality behind every shot. Being in a room full of artists who understand the grind, appreciate the hustle, and live for their art was an overwhelming experience. It was a room full of appreciation and validation, making the inclusion in this lineup of "real shooters" something truly special. This exhibition was more than just an opportunity to display my work; it was a chance to be part of a community that values and celebrates the art of storytelling through photography.
My Exhibition: The Legacy Series
For this exhibition, I curated a gallery of six 11x14 images, each telling a powerful story of dedication, legacy, and triumph in the world of boxing. Here are the stories behind each photograph:
“Ties To Greatness”
In this image, Jesus Soto Karass is meticulously tying his boxing shoes. This act holds profound symbolism, representing the dedication and readiness required to compete in the world of boxing. It captures a moment of quiet determination, highlighting the meticulous preparation that precedes greatness. The deliberate movements, the focus in his eyes, and the quiet moment before the storm all come together to tell a story of unwavering commitment.
“La Fea”
"La Fea" shows Jesus Soto Karass practicing his legendary overhand right on the heavy bag. This compelling image not only conveys the raw intensity of the move but also reveals the two knockout images that defined his historic victory against Andre Berto. It encapsulates the enduring legacy of a fighter whose career has been forged by such powerful moments. The sweat, the muscle tension, and the look of concentration all speak to the years of hard work and dedication that have shaped him into a boxing legend.
“El Jefe”
"El Jefe" symbolizes the generational torch of boxing, as Jesus Soto Karass looks at an enlarged photograph of his late father, also a professional boxer, while being celebrated after a victorious bout. This heartwarming image pays homage to his father's legacy and the tradition passed from one generation to the next within the Soto Karass family. It's a tribute to their profound connection that transcends time and an enduring legacy of dedication, passion, and triumph. The emotion in his eyes as he looks at his father’s photograph tells a story of respect, love, and the unbroken bond of family tradition.
“Ready For Battle”
"Ready For Battle" captures a vulnerable moment as Jesus Soto Karass assists a young professional boxer, George “El Phantasma” Navarro, in gearing up for an impending fight. With meticulous care, he ensures every detail is in place, from lacing up the boxer's gloves to adjusting the trunks. This image embodies the raw anticipation and determination that precede a bout, revealing the essence of readiness and commitment to the sport of boxing. It's a testament to the invaluable mentorship and guidance that Soto Karass provides, arming the next generation with the knowledge and spirit needed for the battles ahead. The trust between the mentor and the mentee, the passing of skills and wisdom, and the shared moment of preparation create a powerful narrative of legacy and mentorship.
“Putasos”
"Putasos" captures an intense moment as George Navarro, known as "El Phantasma," delivers a potent punch to his opponent. The image, framed by the ropes of the boxing ring, showcases a fierce battle, where a blend of unfiltered intensity and raw power is exchanged. Coached by Jesus Soto Karass and Rene Ordorica, this image symbolizes the passing of knowledge and the lasting legacy of guidance and mentorship. It's a striking reminder of the impact that Soto Karass and Ordorica have on the next generation of boxers. The raw power, the concentration, and the energy in the ring are palpable, making this image a testament to the physical and mental strength required in boxing.
“Two Bands”
"Two Bands" features Jesus Soto Karass holding two prestigious championship belts - the NABF and WBC titles. This powerful image is a testament to his legacy, representing years of dedication and battles that led to these remarkable accolades. "Two Bands" symbolizes the crowning moments of his career and underscores his profound impact on the sport, solidifying his place as a boxing legend. These belts are a testament to his tireless work ethic and pursuit of success. The pride and satisfaction in his expression as he holds the belts speak volumes about the sacrifices, the victories, and the journey that has defined his career.
Gratitude and Reflection
I am deeply grateful to George "El Phantasma" Navarro for allowing me to document his journey, and to Jesus Soto-Karass and his family for allowing me to capture these intimate photos. This exhibition was not just about showcasing my work; it was about honoring the stories and legacies of these incredible athletes. It was a humbling and exhilarating experience to have my very first gallery showing be such a meaningful and profound event.
This experience has taught me the importance of community and the power of storytelling. Each photograph in my gallery is a testament to the resilience, dedication, and spirit of the individuals I documented. It was a privilege to be able to share these stories with an audience that truly appreciates the art and the effort behind every shot.
